TV Still Dominates Media Consumption
Nielsen has shared results of its "State of the Media" research. Not that this fact is surprising, but television is still the most preferred gateway for media consumption.
In the last quarter of '08, the average household watched over 151 hours of TV in a month. Internet users logged on for 27 viewing hours a month, and mobile subscribers registered four hours of video and three hours of Internet a month. Other highlights of the research as presented by Nielsen include:
- Despite 3 in 10 households owning a DVR, live TV continues to be the favorite way to watch TV.
- 54 percent of U.S. households have one or two TVs.
- Hispanic households are more than twice as likely as other groups to download movies.
- Fully 91 percent of households have Internet access, with 57 percent having high-speed connections.
- Viewers can be clustered into eight discrete segments based on gender, age, media consumption levels, ethnicity and social outlook.
Nielsen's President of Global Media Client Services Dave Thomas says, "Media has become a digital funhouse: phones deliver TV programming. Computers enable phone calls. Televisions serve as gaming arcades. Consumers access video wherever and whenever they can. But the fact remains that TV still dominates."
Nielsen's findings echo a study from McPheters & Company finding that TV ads and even magazine ads are proving more effective than online advertising. This information is a wake-up call to get online advertisers to take advantage of tactics that inspire grater engagement from consumers.
Google Insights for Search Gets 3 New Features
Google has launched a few new features for Insights for Search, which should make the tool even more useful to marketers than it already was. If you are unfamiliar with the tool, it was launched last summer, and it helps marketers find trends in search so they can be applied to your own marketing campaigns. It was discussed fairly extensively here.

One of the new features is the addition of new data sources. Insights for Search now incorporates data from Google News, Image and Product search. This will give users better insight into what people are searching for beyond just Google Web Search. It's not hard to imagine why this additional data would be of use.
"The new Insights for Search lets you break down search data in several ways," says Google's Hicham Alaoui. "For starters, you can take a look at the rising News searches over the past 7, 30, or 90 days."
The second feature is category suggestion. When a user types in a search term, the tool suggests all relevant categories that the term might fit into. Google gives the example of "apple," which would bring back varied category suggestions like "Computers & Electronics," "Entertainment," and "Food & Drink."
The third feature is the ability to "drill down to specific geographic regions" (in the US) to see how search interest levels vary. At the Google News Blog, they look at an example for "March Madness" which suggests that basketball is the most popular in states like Kentucky (living here, I certainly believe that), Kansas, and Iowa.

Additional Resources
Google offers one of their famous "in 60 seconds" videos for Insights for Search, which you can view here:
Google also offers an Insights for Search gadget that you can add to your iGoogle home page for added convenience. That can be found here.
Don't forget about YouTube Insight either. This is a great analytics tool that can help you get the most out of your videos. They recently added additional features that help you track engagement. Read my interview with YouTube Product Manager Tracy Chan for more on that as well as on all the different ways businesses can use YouTube to their advantage.
Internet advertising revenues in the U.S. remain solid, reaching $23 billion in 2008, according to a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Overall 2008 revenues totaled a record $23.4 billion, surpassing 2007's record of $21.2 billion by $2.2 billion or 10.6 percent.
Fourth-quarter revenues of $6.1 billion mark the first time the interactive advertising industry reached and exceeded $6 billion in a single quarter. The figures represent a $154 million or 2.6 percent increase from 2007's fourth quarter, which had revenues of $5.9 billion.
"We are seeing an ongoing secular shift from traditional to online media as marketers recognize that ad dollars invested in interactive media are effective at influencing consumers and delivering measurable results," said Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of the IAB.
"In this uncertain economy, where marketers know they need to do more with less, interactive advertising provides the tools for them to build deep, engaging relationships with consumers-the experience marketers gain from this will deliver dividends especially after the economy turns around."

Search remains the main driver of revenue growth, showing a 19.8 percent increase over 2007. Digital video is still a small overall contributor, more than doubled its revenue with an increase to $734 million from $324 million in 2007.
As in 2007, retail, financial services, computing and automotive remained the four largest verticals among Internet advertisers in 2008. Consumer packaged goods, an industry historically slow to embrace interactive advertising, increased its share of total Internet ad revenues by 60 percent over 2007. The Internet is now the third largest ad-supported medium.
"Though some categories in the fourth quarter slowed or even dipped, reflecting the current economic challenges, the overall performance is up, confirming interactive's ever-growing importance to the successful marketing mix," said David Silverman, Partner, Assurance, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Murdoch Says Newspapers Must Charge For Online Content
News Corp. chief executive Rupert Murdoch said on Thursday that newspapers must find a way to charge for online content to make up for declining ad revenue.
"People are used to reading everything on the net for free, and that's going to have to change," Murdoch told attendees at the annual Cable Show event in Washington, D.C.
Murdoch cited The New York Times as an example, saying it has a "very, very good Web site." He said he did not believe the paper would make any money online unless it changes its current business model.

Rupert Murdoch
"They cannot give their advertising away itself because the inventory of display adverting on the web is doubling every year, so they're never going to make money out of it on an advertising model," he said.
"I think the classifieds, though, which was their river of gold, is probably draining away and will be gone forever."
Murdoch owns The Wall Street Journal, which News Corp purchased in 2007 along with its parent Dow Jones & Co, is one of the few major U.S. newspapers that charges for access to its online content.
News Corp also owns the New York Post, the Times of London and other papers in Britain and Australia, which are available for free online.
Murdoch also said News Corp is investing with partners in a new mobile device that would allow people to read electronic versions of newspapers.
The portable device would be different than Amazon's Kindle and Sony's E-Reader in that it would be designed more for the newspaper format.
"What we're investing in and others are investing in - and it's only software development at the moment - is a bigger panel to look a little bit like a small newspaper, but very readable, four colors, and you get the edition as of that moment," he said.
UK Online Publishers Predict Digital Revenues Will Grow 16% In ‘09
UK online publishers predict their digital revenues will increase by 16 percent this year, according to an annual census survey by the Association of Online Publishers (AOP).
The census was carried out from February 9 to March 2, against the backdrop of economic uncertainty. Digital publishers remain pragmatic about their long -term future of their businesses with 63 percent of online publishers planning to increase their digital investment this year, while only 7 percent anticipate a decrease in investment.

Alison Reay
"Given the global trading climate we're operating in, this is a motivating insight into the mood of UK publishers for the coming year - and it's encouraging that they remain focused on developing their offering for their audiences in both B2B and B2C areas," said Alison Reay, AOP Chairman and Digital & Multi-media Director Telegraph Media Group.
Just over half (51%) of respondents said the focus of their investment would be building off line and online cross-media skilled teams, while 28 percent said investment in technology and innovation were priorities in the coming year.
One of the main trends to emerge was the move towards integration of staff across traditional and digital businesses, with 65 percent of respondents expecting more functions across departments including advertising planning/research to be integrated in 2009.
"This year's Census has highlighted that the revenue model for advertising doesn't appear to be significantly shifting," said Tim Cain, AOP's Head of Research and Insight.
"Whilst we're seeing CPC increasingly adopted as a pricing mechanism (up 50% year on year) the advertising model is still predominantly led by CPM (89%) and sponsorship (84%), which are also being used more widely amongst publishers."

Building Quality Inbound Links
One of the most important factors in determining a site's PageRank, as well as overall ranking within Google's index, is the quality of incoming links. Today, we look at some tips from insiders across the web on how to go about building a quality incoming link structure.
Thoughts On Link Buidling
Obtaining quality links can feel like an arduous process when trying to get a site off the ground. Sure, there are lots of shady methods that one could employ to achieve "instant linkification" if one were so inclined, but these methods present little in terms of a long term strategy for link building.
So, enterprising journalist that I am, I took to the web to see what those most familiar with the practice of link building had to say about getting quality inbound links.
Ken Yarmosh is a strategy consultant for Viget Labs. In his personal blog, he outlines 7 ways to achieve quality links. You can read the blog entry for a complete rundown, but there are two items that I believe bear specific mention:
Do, say, or write something really stupid (or controversial).
It's funny how the extremes work. Honestly, there are too many examples to choose from on this one. And I don't really advocate it anyway. But if you are interested, you can check out Bert Decker's Top Ten (Best and) Worst Communicators of 2006 to refresh your memory on some good examples.
Ah, the art of the sound byte; it's finally crossed over into the online realm. Boldness of speech, misplaced or not, goes a long way in getting people to link to your content. Make outlandish claims (at least try to back them up, though), call out companies and individuals if you don't like what they're doing, and don't be afraid to rock the boat.
Or, as my colleague Jason Lee Miller would say, "Write like you've got a pair."
Make people laugh.
Everyone loves a good laugh. Think about the vast majority of e-mails and links that your family and friends have forwarded to you recently. The likelihood is that they were something that made you laugh or at least smile. A good example would include the Evolution of Dance or the old Numa Numa video (still a classic in my mind).
This goes hand in hand with the previous point. If you're going to have the guts to make controversial statements, you have to be willing to not take yourself so seriously. Before the website's recent "change in direction", Valleywag was a sterling example of controversial humor. With Nick Douglas as the main writer, there was nary a day that went by that I didn't experience a giant belly laugh over something that had been written over at the 'Wag.
Humor is powerful in luring links to your content.
Okay, so we've touched on some things that you should do in order to make a site more linkable. Now, let's look at something to avoid in striving for quality inbound links. Donna Konley at the Web Design Library gives this warning to site administrators:
Avoid Link Farms and Exchanges.
Link farms are designed to allow people to submit Web site links so that they can increase the number of links leading to their Web sites. The problem with link farms is that they usually accept links from anyone, which means that the quality of the links on these sites is very low. Links to computer repair shops may be published next to links leading to clothing retailers.
Another problem with link farms is that you cannot control the links displayed. If there are adult sites or other questionable material linked to from the link farm or exchange, you run the risk of having prospects associate you with that type of Web site. Knowing how to keep your links high in quality and relevance can help you achieve the best results from your link-building efforts.
Again, don't take the quick fix. In the long run, your site's reputation, as well as it's ranking within the index, will suffer more than prosper from questionable link building tactics.
Content issues are key, but are there other methods when it comes to bringing in links? Brian Hawkins of Extreme Site Promotions offers this tip:
Allow other websites to use your forum or discussion board for their own site. Just have them link directly to the forum. You can even setup a special forum/category and make them a moderator for that section or alternately you can offer to run it for them so they don't need to increase their workload. Not only will they be linking to your site they'll be actively sending traffic to it.
Seek to form partnerships with other content providers. Build your links over time by establishing a good rapport with other reputable businesses.
All these methods will provide a solid foundation when it comes to linkage. Obviously, as a business grows, the methods in which it generates incoming links will change. There is no "one size fits all" approach to link building, only underlying concepts which companies will have to adapt to fit specific needs and goals.
If you can manage to do all this, and do it well, you can expect to see a marked improvement in the quality of inbound links to your site.

Habit - by Edwin Harkness SpinaThis simple statement is deceptively profound. Most people's lives are comprised of a collection of habits that dictate many of their physical, emotional and mental actions and reactions. Depending on the level of conscious awareness you invest in a habit's creation, habits can either enslave you, turning you into a mindless automaton, or free you to pursue creative, joyful activities that enhance and give meaning to your life. Most people have a mixture of good and bad habits.

But, regardless of the moment you currently find yourself in, the world's wake-up call is loudly gonging throughout the planet. Being a practicing Buddhist and a film maker I was eager to link the two together, to create an entry point film, something which you could watch on various levels and perhaps gain insight not only to what some believe to be an exotic eastern religion, but also into one's own true nature, yet to be discovered.
